12-13 Season

The Red Velvet Cake War

In this riotously funny Southern-fried comedy, the three Verdeen cousins – Gaynelle, Peaches, and Jimmie Wyvette – could not have picked a worse time to throw their family reunion. Their outrageous antics have set tongues wagging in the small town of Sweetgum (just down the road from Fayro) and the eyes of Texas are upon them, as their self-righteous Aunt LaMerle is quick to point out. Having “accidentally” crashed her minivan through the bedroom wall of her husband’s girlfriend’s doublewide, Gaynelle is one frazzled nerve away from a spectacular meltdown. Peaches, the saucy number one mortuarial cosmetologist in the tri-county area, is struggling to decide if it’s time to have her long-absent trucker husband declared dead. And Jimmie Wyvette, the roughhewn store manager of Whatley’s Western Wear, is resorting to extreme measures to outmaneuver a priss-pot neighbor for the affections of Sweetgum’s newest widower.

But the cousins can’t back out of the reunion now. It’s on and Gaynelle’s hosting it; Peaches and Jimmie Wyvette have decided its success is the perfect way to prove Gaynelle’s sanity to a skeptical court-appointed psychologist. Unfortunately, they face an uphill battle as a parade of wildly eccentric Verdeens gathers on the hottest day of July, smack-dab in the middle of Texas tornado season. Things spin hilariously out of control when a neighbor’s pet devours everything edible, a one-eyed suitor shows up to declare his love and a shocking high-stakes wager is made on who bakes the best red velvet cake. As this fast-paced uproarious romp barrels toward its surprising climax, you’ll wish your own family reunion was this much fun!

The Drowsy Chaperone

The curtain rises on a present-day musical theatre fanatic eager to tell you about his favorite Broadway musical -- “The Drowsy Chaperone.” He’s the ultimate Everyfan and “Drowsy” is his guilty pleasure.

As he begins listening to the rare cast recording, the show cleverly and magically blooms to life, telling the hilarious tale of a pampered Broadway starlet and her debonair fiance, an overzealous producer, a dizzy chorine, the Latin lover and a couple of bumbling gangsters. Ruses are played. Hi-jinks occur. And the plot spins everyone into musical comedy euphoria.

"To chase his blues away, a modern day musical theatre addict known simply as 'Man in Chair' drops the needle on his favorite LP — the 1928 musical comedy The Drowsy Chaperone. From the crackle of his hi-fi, the uproariously funny musical magically bursts to life on stage, telling the tale of a pampered Broadway starlet who wants to give up show business to get married, her producer who sets out to sabotage the nuptials, her chaperone, the debonair groom, the dizzy dame, the Latin lover and a pair of gangsters who double as pastry chefs. Man in Chair's infectious love of The Drowsy Chaperone speaks to anyone who has ever been transported by the theatre."

My Three Angels

Get ready for a Christmas comedy! The scene is French Guiana, a region where on Christmas day the temperature has graciously dropped to 104 degrees. Three convicts are employed as roofers by a family, whose roof is in desperate need of maintenance. On the way from France is an evil-minded cousin, to oust the father of the family from his business, and his cold-blooded nephew, who is jilting the father's daughter for an heiress. The three convicts—two of them murderers, the third a swindler—take the visitors on. All three have warm hearts and are passionate believers in true justice. Possessing every criminal art and penal grace, they set matters right and in doing so redeem themselves as real life angels to the grateful family.

STAGE RIGHT announces auditions for The Miracle Worker on July 15-16, 2012 at 7 PM at the historic Crighton Theatre.

Blind, deaf and mute, HELEN KELLER is a little girl with limited outlets for communication with the outside world. Cute as a button and clever like a fox, she’s got her entire family wrapped around her spoiled little finger.

Though a concerned and caring mother, KATE KELLER is near the end of her rope in caring for Helen. Often more concerned with appeasing Helen than attempting to teach her, Kate only reinforces a foul temperament in her daughter.

CAPTAIN ARTHUR KELLER, a savvy military mind and father to both Helen and James Keller, is more sure on the battlefield than in matters of the heart. The role of Captain Keller has been pre-cast.

While no one can fully identify with Helen’s unique set of limitations, ANNIE SULLIVAN may come the closest having once been blind herself. She has led a difficult life and she knows what could be in store for Helen if she cannot learn to behave and to communicate with those around her.

Son to the Captain and stepson to Kate, JAMES just can’t seem to fit in with the Keller household. Ridiculed by his father and often subjugated by the rest of the family, James is on his own quest to find how he can break through and reach his family.

A true Southern matron, AUNT EV seems to have an opinion on just about everything.

PERCY and MARTHA are both playmates for Helen and servants for the Keller family.

A mentor for Annie, ANAGNOS serves as the warm, reassuring voice for her when she feels backed into a corner.

A concerned member of the Keller clan, servant VINEY is close to the action.

The DOCTOR will be played by various members of the community.

The Miracle Worker

Immortalized onstage and screen by Anne Bancroft and Patty Duke, this classic tells the story of Annie Sullivan and her student, blind and mute Helen Keller. The Miracle Worker dramatizes the volatile relationship between the lonely teacher and her charge. Trapped in a secret, silent world, unable to communicate, Helen is violent, spoiled, almost sub-human and treated by her family as such. Only Annie realizes that there is a mind and spirit waiting to be rescued from the dark, tortured silence. With scenes of intense physical and emotional dynamism, Annie's success with Helen finally comes with the utterance of a single, glorious word: "water".
